If you have a hobby of collecting fossils, hunting rocks, or just an avid fan of geology, Tasmania is offering a place called Fossil Bluff for you to explore. The place is known as a geological monument of the state, and is also encompassed by numerous geological wonders.

Due to the waves of the Bass Strait, a sandstone bluff that contains folds of fossils which is enclosed in the stone and is called Fossil Bluff was formed. Bass Strait is a stretched ocean that splits Tasmania from Australia. The bluff is nestled beneath the ocean for about 38 million years ago and it lies above some layers of tillite which were stored there since the Permian period. When it's low tide, you can stroll around the bluff and see for yourself where sandstone and tillite meet. For those who have great interest about fossils, you will surely see some fossils in majority of the sandstone. The fossils are showcasing its climatic conditions that happened on earth during Oligocene period.

You may get some pictures of the fossils but taking it as a souvenir or as a specimen is not possible in the Bluff.

It is possible to walk down the Fossil Bluff, the beach and to the Silver Gull rookery positioned along the mouth of the Inglis River when the tide is low. The shoreline is inhabited by Fairy Penguins and by the months of September through February you can witness their nesting areas by searching signs by the use of their waste. Avoid distracting these penguins, reports said that their numbers are decreasing mainly because of the Wynyard Golf Club which is situated at the top of the Fossil Bluff. Fairy Penguins are the smallest kind of the penguin family. Standing only at 43cm, Little Penguins can be found down the coast of southern Australia and New Zealand.

On the west side of the Bluff is a settlement that is famous for its 1888 built station and agricultural products. The area is considered the richest all over Tasmania and all credits goes to the volcanic soil present in Table Cape. Table Cape is located somewhere in the north coast of Tasmania.

You will notice a flat gray rock called Wynyard Tillite that stretches for kilometres from east to west. This tillite originated from the Permian period and is about 280 million years old. It was said that the Australian continent was just a fraction of a huge continent called Gondwana, it was at this age that the tillite was formed and the rest are history. The area is full of granites, jaspers and agates which you take home as souvenirs from your trip.

Fossil Bluff is only a 3 kilometre drive from the main city of Wynyard. You could walk down the serene historical beach and enjoy the incredible view of the Bass Strait.
